Straight From Facebook: Inside the Circumcision Room

The 2020 elections were rather stressful and I'm so glad they're finally over. That said, I don't really feel like going into an elaborate post, as that takes a lot of time and thought, so I thought I'd merely copy/paste a post I saw on Facebook, which is perfect the way it is anyway, complete with demonstrative photo. I'll keep my own thoughts to a minimum.

This was posted on a profile called "Brother K."

INSIDE THE CIRCUMCISION ROOM of a large pediatric office. The circumcision board (#1) is leaning against a defibrillator (green case #2) to restart the baby's heart when it stops during the circumcision, and a suctioning canister (white container with tubes #3) to suction out the vomit when the baby pukes during the circumcision. The mom described a large table in the center of the room with a low overhanging light to illuminate the circumcision board during the penis surgery.

The mom told me, "I went to my baby's two month app and they put me in the circumcision room. The moment I walked in and saw the board I said oh my God you do circumcisions in here that’s terrible. She just looked at me and said yeah we do them.

"They even have a crash cart. I could see the defibrillator. And that is what the [circumcision] board is leaning against. They had this huge bed in the middle with the light above it. The light was low. You could tell it was focused for the penis area. It was so disturbing.

"On the shelves they had a bunch of equipment and labeling. Like Vaseline, and gauze things like that. I felt so sick just being in there. I couldn’t even pay attention to the nurse's questions. I could just feel the presence of all of the bad shit.

"The nurse was waiting behind me when I took the photo. Then they took me to a smaller room. A standard size exam room. I started crying when I told the doctor I never wanted to be in that room again. The doctor didn’t even know the board is called a Circumstraint. He said he called it a papoose [board]. I told him I know that it is called a Circumstraint.

"These people act like I’m crazy for being against this abuse."
_____
NOTE: Thanks to three American nurses who have confirmed the names and purposes of the devices in this photo.

Oh for the day when these superfluous rooms are eliminated from hospitals.

We need to stop euphemising the forced severing of the foreskins from babies as "male infant circumcision" and start calling it what it is; infant male genital mutilation.

Unless there is genuine medical indication to circumcise a healthy, non-consenting minor, and let's just be honest with ourselves, there never is, doing this to a child is purely cosmetic, plain and simple.

In addition to violating a healthy, non-consenting person's basic human rights, it's also a needless risk; the risks of male infant circumcision include infection, partial or full ablation of the penis, hemorrhage and even death.

Because this is cosmetic, non-medical procedure, any risk above zero is unconscionable.

Without medical or clinical indication, doctors have no business performing surgery on healthy, non-consenting minors, let alone be eliciting any kind of "choice" from parents.

That this woman was made to wait in this torture chamber out of a horror movie, no, that these rooms exist at all, is despicable.

These rooms need to be eliminated from hospitals yesterday.

Harvard Censors Intellect for Circumcision Play at Sanders Theatre

Could we expect any less?

Eric Clopper, an intellect in many fields, computer technology, physics and data analysis among other things, was placed on leave by Harvard for his intactivist play at Sanders Theatre.

On May 1st, Clopper performed a play called "Sex and Circumcision: An American Love Story," where he gives what is possibly the best, most knowledgeable and well-researched talk on circumcision, and anatomically correct male genitals in all of intactivist history.

The performance is 2 hours long, and he covers every nook, every cranny, every possible logical fallacy surrounding the advocacy of forced male genital cutting, from religious, to cultural, to pseudo-scientific to pseudo-medical.

He gives a complete and thorough discussion on this topic in a way I can only dream of, would that I could arrange my thoughts in proper order.

He leaves no area of this topic untouched. He comes down hard on every last bastion of advocacy for the practiced of male infant genital mutilation, up to and including the most taboo holy cow of all; religion.

He actually attacks the Jewish covenant of circumcision as a "satanic ritual."

Being Jewish himself, he has a certain permission to do that.

For non-Jewish intactivists, this is simply a no-go zone to be avoided at all costs for fear of the anti-Semite card.

His unbridled critique of Jewish involvement in male infant circumcision advocacy in America is probably what has caused the administration at Harvard to put him on leave.

I'm reminded of Norman Finkelstein, who was in a similar situation for being a sharp critic of the state of Israel.

A Jewish critic of male infant circumcision is probably despised the most by Jewish advocates of it, because what are you going to say to him?

The "anti-Semite" card doesn't work to shut down the conversation, because well, he's Jewish!

No, you can't break Godwin's Law on a Jew, so the best you can do is try to silence him.

Disenfranchise and delegitimize him in any which way you can.

There is probably no greater menace to male infant circumcision than an angry Jewish critic of it.

I must commend Eric Clopper for his bravery in broaching this subject and not holding back his harsh condemnation of it, in spite of the hate, anger and contempt he knows he's going to face.

There is not a more despised man than a teller of the truth.

The following could be found on his website on 7/14/2018:

What's Next?
After Sanders Theatre

Thanks to all who have been in touch since my May 1 play at Harvard's Sanders Theatre. The play was very well received by all except the Harvard Crimson and Harvard administrators. Unfortunately, I was immediately placed on leave pending "a full review of the May 1 performance and events leading up to it."

Some new friends and allies, including Harvard alumni, have reached out to offer support. I can't find words to express how much these shows of support have meant to me in these uncertain times.

My determination to fight against this barbaric human rights violation is unwavering despite Harvard's Goliath pose.

Some people have asked me whether I might take the play on tour, and I would be interested in exploring the possibilities. If you would like to sponsor a production in your area, please feel free to get in touch with me at eric@clopper.com.

It makes me glad, and it fills me with hope to see Jewish critics of circumcision speak out against it with a passion; if anyone can stop the forced genital cutting of children in this lifetime, it's them.

One of the biggest reasons male infant genital mutilation continues in the US today, is because of disproportionate Jewish influence in high places in American medicine.

It is perhaps only an angry, Jewish male who can actually come out and say it without mincing words.

Eric Clopper's bravery is to be commended, as he knows this may come at a price.

On Facebook, his video was deleted after 20,000 views in two days.

If you're interested in seeing the whole 2-hour show, visit http://www.clopper.com

Availability may be for a limited time; no doubt there are people trying to make it impossible for him to post.

FACEBOOK: Another Baby Fighting For His Life Post Circumcision

This was in my Facebook news feed today:

TRAGEDY IN AMERICA, A BABY BORN May 23rd, 2017, FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE: "A beautiful boy, with a head full of gorgeous hair: Two weeks after his birth, during circumcision, strep passed the blood barrier and he became septic. He now has sepsis, pneumonia, and bacterial meningitis, with seizures. Neurology has put him on antiseizure meds. A feeding tube into his belly and breathing assistance from a ventilator." ~Mom's statements, current as of today, Tuesday, June 13, 2017
These keep happening. (See the list of other posts to similar stories down below.)

What else can I say?

The risks of circumcision include infection, partial or full ablation, hemorrhage and even death.

The risks are real, American medical organizations keep this information from parents.

Doctors and hospitals are not legally obligated to report adverse circumcision outcome, and guilty parents are complicit in keeping the death of their child who died from needless surgery under wraps.

American medical organizations often minimize the risks and complications of male infant circumcision, but who is actually counting?

Can we actually trust the numbers they give us, given that a great majority of their members profit from male infant circumcision, and their duty is to the well-being of their MEMBERS?

Given that doctors and hospitals are not required to report this information?

And even if the risks were as low as they say, how is anything above ZERO conscionable for elective, non-medical cosmetic surgery on a healthy, non-consenting child?

The risks are real, and here is the proof.

We don't hear about this because they hardly make the news, and they barely surface on social media like Facebook.

For the same reasons; people want to hide these.

Slide them under the carpet.

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO STOP???

ARE YOU LISTENING AAP?

ARE YOU LISTENING DOUGLAS DIEKEMA?

This child's blood is on YOUR HANDS.

When reports like these surface on Facebook etc. make them go VIRAL.

ENOUGH OF THIS.

MADERA, CA: Another Circumcision Complication

Saw this on my Facebook news feed.

This time the circumcision botch happened at Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, CA.

I keep making these posts. (See links below.)

What else can I say?

Male infant circumcision is cosmetic, elective, non-medical surgery.

The risks of male infant circumcision include infection, partial or full ablation, hemorrhage, and even death.

It is unconscionable that healthy, non-consenting baby boys are being put at risk for complications for an elective, non-medical, radically altering genital surgery.

How many of these have to happen?

Valley Children's Hospital's website is down, but their Facebook page can be accessed here.

I close with my blog's Mission Statement:

Mission Statement
The foreskin is not a birth defect. Neither is it a congenital deformity or genetic anomaly akin to a 6th finger or a cleft. Neither is it a medical condition like a ruptured appendix or diseased gall bladder. Neither is it a dead part of the body, like the umbilical cord, hair, or fingernails.

The foreskin is not "extra skin." The foreskin is normal, natural, healthy, functioning tissue, present in all males at birth; it is as intrinsic to male genitalia as labia are to female genitalia.

Unless there is a medical or clinical indication, the circumcision of a healthy, non-consenting individuals is a deliberate wound; it is the destruction of normal, healthy tissue, the permanent disfigurement of normal, healthy organs, and by very definition, infant genital mutilation, and a violation of the most basic of human rights.

Without medical or clinical indication, doctors have absolutely no business performing surgery in healthy, non-consenting individuals, much less be eliciting any kind of "decision" from parents, and much less expect to be reimbursed.

Genital integrity, autonomy and self-determination are inalienable human rights. I am against the forced circumcision of healthy, non-consenting minors because it violates these rights.

Genital mutilation, whether it be wrapped in culture, religion or “research” is still genital mutilation.

It is mistaken, the belief that the right amount of “science” can be used to legitimize the deliberate violation of basic human rights.

CIRCUMCISION BOTCH: Another Post-Circumcision Hemorrhage Case Surfaces on Facebook

The American Academy of Pediatrics minimizes the risks and complications of male infant circumcision.

What are the risks?

And are parents being properly informed about them?

The risks of male infant circumcision include infection, partial or full ablation, hemorrhage, and even death.

As minimal as those risks may be, they are real, and parents ought to be informed about them.

The following case managed to appear on Facebook recently:

Are these risks worth it for non-medical, elective surgery on healthy, non-consenting minors?

Without medical or clinical indication, how is it possible doctors are even performing surgery on healthy, non-consenting minors, let alone giving parents any kind of "choice?"

This is just one case, and I constantly read about them on my Facebook news feed.

As it stands, doctors and hospitals are not required to report adverse effects of circumcision, and they have financial incentive to keep this information under wraps.

No one is counting, so the true risks of circumcision are unknown.

Because male infant circumcision is elective, non-medical surgery, how is anything above zero conscionable?

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Circumcision Claims Another Life

A child of four has died after being circumcised, and his parents are left searching for answers.

Below is the online news article translated from Spanish:

Child dies after being circumcised

A child died on Tuesday morning after being circumcised at the Maternal Infant Center. The 4-year-old Yeidy Ramírez Beato was son of Johanna Beato and Anyelo Ramírez.

The directors at the clinic located an Rosario Street still haven't found reasonable explanation as to what caused the death of the minor.

The child's body was taken to INACIF of Santiago to carry out an autopsy to determine the cause of the child's death. (As if this weren't immediately obvious?)

According to the police report and certificate issued by medical examiner Cinencio Uribe, the minor died after being operated by Dr. Nelson Aybar, and anesthesiologist Dr. Abrahán García Gómez.

The child's family told LosMocanos.com, that supposedly it's about medical malpractice, and they seek an explanation as to why their son died.

On the video, the mother was crying uncontrollably as she asked herself "Why my son?"

The child died after having been circumcised.

Hundreds of curious members of the press were inquiring over the sad tragedy, as one can see in the video.

Video uploaded on March 2, 2016

The question is, why was this child operated on?

What illness was the child suffering that he needed to be circumcised?

Was the child suffering a disease for which there was no other solution?

Or did doctors recommend this to the parents for supposed "medical benefits?"

Did the doctors tell the parents that their 4-year-old was suffering "phimosis?"

Were the risks of circumcision clearly explained to the child's parents?

If there was no medical indication, then clearly here, the doctors are to blame, for offering this "choice" to the child's parents.

Reaping profit from non-medical surgery on healthy, non-consenting individuals constitutes medical fraud. In children, clear child abuse.

The saddest part of this is that without clear medical or clinical indication, basically this child died in vain.

Had the child not been submitted to this needless procedure, he would still be alive.

Final Words
The foreskin is not a birth defect. Neither is it a congenital deformity or genetic anomaly akin to a 6th finger or a cleft. Neither is it a medical condition like a ruptured appendix or diseased gall bladder. Neither is it a dead part of the body, like the umbilical cord, hair, or fingernails.

Without medical or clinical indication, doctors have absolutely no business performing surgery in healthy, non-consenting individuals, much less be eliciting any kind of "decision" from parents.

Circumcision has risks.

The risks of circumcision include infection, hemorrhage, partial or full ablation and even death.

Death is a risk of circumcision.

How many times do I have to say this?

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Are parents being adequately informed about this risk?

Had this couple known about this risk, would they have changed their minds?

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Are you listening AAP?

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Circumcision has claimed yet another child.

His blood is on the hands of the AAP and any other medical organization that dares parrot them.

WASHINGTON POST: Ritual Circumcision After Blizzard Painted as "Triumph"

A recent Washington Post article tries very hard to put airs on what would be nothing more than a Jewish child circumcision rite.

The only factor that would mark this one ritual different than any other one that happens is the fact that it happened after a major snow storm.

The storm would have made life difficult for thousands of other people, but somehow this story stood above the rest, making the ordeal worthy of an article on the Washington Post.

The author attempts to frame the whole situation, flights being cancelled, snow being an obstacle for the arrival of the ritual circumciser etc. as some sort of "powerful story" of "struggle" and "the triumph of the human spirit."

To some, this may be the case, but to those of us not conditioned to accept forced male infant genital mutilation as "normal," it's quite the opposite.

Perhaps it is a "triumph" in the eyes of those with a need to fulfill what they see as divine commandment to mutilate the genitals of an otherwise healthy, non-consenting child, but from the point of view of the child, who is weak, innocent and vulnerable, it can be nothing more than abandonment and loss.

The author appears to want to elicit a standing ovation and applause, and many will comply without thinking twice.

But how would readers react if, instead of male infant circumcision, the tale were bout female infant circumcision?

What if this story were, instead, about a couple, who, after a long trial of "strength and endurance," a sandstorm that posed as an obstacle for instance, were "finally" able to have their daughter circumcised?

Would it matter to readers that their family saw circumcising a baby daughter as this "long-standing tradition?"

Would it matter that they saw this as a matter of religious sacrament?

Would it matter that it was a "struggle" for relatives and the ritual circumciser to arrive "in the nick of time?"

Surely arguments that male infant circumcision dwarfs in comparison would quell disgust.

A freshly severed child's foreskin.

An infant's clitoris, barely visible, on a pair of scissors.

Surely it would be of comfort that the procedure was performed by a trained professional using sterile utensils under pristine conditions.

Surely adult women saying they are circumcised and they are "just fine" ought to justify it.

Somehow, I doubt that arguments of "tradition," "religion" and "parental prerogative" would be enough to silence the ensuing shitstorm.

The snowstorm in the Washington Post story is a diversion; merely the tip of the iceberg.

The child endured unnecessary pain, and a needless risk for herpes, infection, partial or full ablation, hemorrhage and even death.

Forget all these other challenges the child was put through, everyone let's pay attention to that nasty snowstorm.

The efforts the author goes through to beautify what is happening, the fact that there has to be an article trying to paint this story as a "success" after "a long struggle" speaks to how the author really feels about the situation.

This could have been a story about someone finally getting a much needed heart.

A doctor making it in time to perform an emergency c-section that saved both mother and child.

You know?

An actual emergency in which there were real stakes.

But this?

Where a child's life was put at stake?

Part of the most intimate part of his body permanently destroyed?

His sexual experience changed forever?

Sorry, but it's a terrible attempt at beautifying a sick, disgusting tradition.

The author in the Washington Post article strives to make this a beautiful story about parents who "struggle" but "finally made it," but strip away the "tradition," "endurance" and religious mumbo-jumbo, take away the blizzard and you're left with nothing more than ritual child abuse and genital mutilation.

It is nothing but sick, disgusting, self-serving opportunism on the part of this Washington Post author, and it's deplorable.

Some may yet defend ritual genital mutilation as "tradition," and I find this ironic.

For one, the fact that "religious tradition" cannot justify female infant circumcision demonstrates that it fails as an argument.

And secondly, the fact that the child's mother is a rabbi, and she doesn't have to undergo some sort of genital cutting ritual, not to mention the fact that the ritual mutilation was performed by a female mohel, exposes the hypocrisy in invoking "tradition" as an alibi; this goes to show you that traditions can and do change.

Ritual male infant circumcision is one of those traditions whose time has come.

The time has come to condemn this tradition in male children, as in female children, for what it is; ritualized child abuse and forced genital mutilation.

TUNISIA: 6yo Loses His Penis to Circumcision

A child of 6 loses his entire penis to circumcision.

In countries outside of the United States, Muslims tend to circumcise their male children at much later ages. (Approx. 98% of Tunisia's population is Muslim)

The surgery was performed in a hospital setting by a licensed professional handling the latest technology.

The child was left for a week in excruciating pain as he suffered necrotic deterioration without any help for what was done.

A functional dildo attached subcutaneously is being considered as a replacement.

The main concerns seem to be that he be able to urinate standing up and that his future partners might "feel something."

Nevermind the child.

And let's forget about the fact that they're trying to repair a botch for a surgery that was never needed in the first place.

CIRCUMCISION DEATH: A Casual Report of a Circumcision Death Makes the News

The body of a 9-week old was found, and the news report only briefly mentions that the medical examiners found that he died from a kidney infection that resulted from a botched circumcision.

Death is a risk from circumcision.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact rate of deaths caused by circumcision because people have incentive to hide the fact.

At 1.3 million infant circumcisions a year, circumcision is a money-maker for pediatricians and OB/GYNs, so trade organizations such as the AAP and ACOG have incentive to hide or downplay deaths due to circumcision.

Doctors have been known to deliberately misattribute the death of a child caused by circumcision to secondary causes, such as "bleeding," "hemorrhage" or "septic shock," so when a child dies as a direct result of circumcision, it is rarely reported as such. Parents are usually complicit with the doctor because they feel just as guilty for agreeing to have the procedure done.

Circumcision is an important ritual for Jews and Muslims, and religious communities have been known to be complicit in hiding culprits whenever deaths due to circumcision arise.

Whether it be avoiding lawsuits, or protecting a sacred ritual, there is great incentive to hide or downplay deaths caused by circumcision, so it is difficult to know exactly how many newborns succumb to death caused by circumcision.

Here, we witness a rare instance in which a death caused by circumcision actually makes the news.

Notice how nonchalant and casual the reporting of this fact is.

Readers will gloss over this fact as if it were no big deal.

Circumcision has risks.

They include infection, partial or full ablation and even death.

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Because male infant circumcision is elective, non-medical surgery, this risk is unconscionable.

Is the AAP counting?

Because we are.

Death is a risk of circumcision.

Are American doctors properly warning parents of this risk?

CANADA: CPS Diverges from AAP on Infant Circumcision

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a controversial policy statement on circumcision.

While the statement did not culminate in a recommendation as circumcision advocates were hoping for, it was littered with the baseless mantra that "the benefits [of circumcision] outweighed the risks," and with calls for public medical programs to cover it.

The claim that "the benefits outweigh the risks" conflicts with statements that "the benefits [of male infant circumcision] aren't great enough to recommend" it, and that "the true incidence of complications after newborn circumcision are unknown," found within the same Policy Statement.

So out-of-line was the 2012 AAP report, that 38 pediatricians, urologists, epidemiologists, and professors, representing 20 medical organizations and 15 universities and hospitals in 17 countries formally rejected it.

Even so, circumcision advocates took the "benefits outweigh the risks" soundbite and ran with it.

Some go as far as actually saying the AAP has given a recommendation for circumcision, when it is clear to those who have actually read their 2012 statement that they stop short.

After the AAP released their statement, it didn't take very long for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to mirror them. Almost like clockwork, the CDC released a statement similar to that of the AAP, seemingly giving circumcision advocates yet more ammunition for promoting male infant circumcision. (As the AAP, the CDC shies away from a clear recommendation for male infant circumcision.)

With the Canadian Paediatric Society due for a release of their own policy statement on male infant circumcision, speculation arose as to whether or not they too would mirror the controversial AAP statement.

Circumcision advocates were hoping the CPS would get into lockstep with the AAP, and repeat the same "benefits outweigh the risk" slogan.

Much to their chagrin, however, the CPS not only failed to join the AAP and CDC in chorus, they outright reaffirmed their position against it.

Said Dr. Thierry Lacaze, chair of the CPS Fetus and Newborn Committee:
"While there may be a benefit for some boys in high risk populations and the procedure could be considered as a treatment or to reduce disease, in most cases, the benefits of circumcision do not outweigh the risks."

Thus the AAP and CPS can be witnessed going separate ways on the matter.

Is the CPS stepping out of line?

Or is it the AAP who is deviating?

The fact of the matter is that the trend of opinion on routine male circumcision is overwhelmingly negative in industrialized nations.

The AAP tried very hard to push the slogan that "the benefits [of circumcision] outweigh the risks" in their 2012 statement, but they were formally rejected by 38 pediatricians, urologists, epidemiologists, and professors, representing 20 medical organizations and 15 universities and hospitals in 17 countries.

And now, the Canadian Paediatric Society joins the number of respected medical organizations who diverge with the AAP.

Thus, it continues to be true:

No respected medical board in the world recommends male infant circumcision. All of them, including the AAP in their latest statement, state that there isn't sufficient evidence to warrant this endorsement.

To say otherwise would be to take an unfounded position against the most respected medical organizations in the West.

Good on the CPS for refusing to buy into the AAP's nonsense.

Mogen Circumcision Clamp Manufacturers Face Civil Lawsuit

Three Mogen Manufacturers and Distributors Face A Civil Law Suit
Mogen Circumcision Instruments of New York, the makers of the Mogen circumcision clamp, went out of business five years ago, but a lawsuit has been filed against several companies that continue to sell and/or make the device, according to the Schmidt Law Firm.

The lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a boy whose penis was partially amputated during a circumcision procedure involving the use of a Mogen circumcision clamp. Doctors amputated the tip of the boy's penis during his circumcision, which took place one week after his birth. The boy was permanently injured, will require future corrective surgery, and will continue to experience significant complications.

The civil lawsuit was filed a week ago in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, against three Pennsylvania-based companies that sell the Mogen Clamp, including Misdom-Frank Corporation, Sklar Corporation, and Medco Inc.

The lawsuit can be accessed in PDF format here.

It's All Happened Before
Five years ago, one where it was ordered to pay $7.5 million by a jury in Massachusetts. The injury behind another lawsuit at Fulton County Superior Court had already put Mogen on notice about the danger of the device.

In a separate case, a judge approved a $4.6 million settlement on a behalf of a boy who lost the head of his penis in a botched circumcision attempt, this time against Miltex Inc. and its parent company, Integra Life Sciences Holding Corp. The doctor who performed the circumcision used a Mogen clamp, though manufactured by Miltex Inc.

According to the plaintiff's court papers filed regarding the settlement:
"Because of the defective design of the circumcision clamp, there was no protection for the head of the penis, and [the doctor] was unable to visualize the glans (or head of the penis) when excising the foreskin."
In this case, the boy, age 8 at the time of the lawsuit, lost 80% of his penis, according to the suit.

Data from Attorneys for the Rights of the Child, ARCLaw, show over 80 million dollars paid on settlements over botched circumcisions since 1985. Beyond the economic value (when compared to a billion dollar a year industry), those numbers represent children whose lives will have been impacted for the rest of their lives due to a non-medical elective surgery.

Notorious for Glans Amputations
The Mogen circumcision clamp is known for glans amputations, even when used by professionals.

In August 2000, the FDA issued the following Safety Communication:
“The clamp may allow too much tissue to be drawn through the opening of the device, thus facilitating the removal of an excessive amount of foreskin and in some cases, a portion of the glans penis. … We received 105 reports of injuries involving circumcision clamps between July 1996 and January 2000. These have included laceration, hemorrhage, penile amputation, and urethral damage.”
The "Manual for early infant male circumcision under local anaesthesia,"published by the World Health organization in 2010, details that both the Mogen clamp and the Gomco clamp have a risk for penile laceration and amputation, but extends to say that "penile amputation can occur even under ideal circumstances" with the Mogen clamp.

In a 2013 study in Botswana, the Mogen clamp and the Plastibell were compared. The adverse events with the Mogen clamp were considered to be more frequent but "minor" (removal of too little skin and development of skin bridges and adhesions). Bleeding was more frequent with the Mogen clamp as well.

Unlike other circumcision devices, the Mogen Clamp has two major design flaws:
  • The head of the penis is not protected by a shield or bell
  • The doctor cannot see the head of the penis when cutting the foreskin with a scalpel.

Common Mogen Problem: The circumciser is blind to the condition of the child's glans. Some or all of the glans is pulled up along with the foreskin, resulting in partial or full glans amputations.
Despite the Mogen clamp's notoriety for glans amputations, and despite the FDA warning given 10 years prior, Mogen Circumcision Instruments insisted 'till the very end that injury was impossible with the use of their clamp. When called for interview, the secretary for the company who was served the papers of the lawsuit that would put them out of business, said that the Mogen circumcision clamp was "painless and safe when used properly."

The Mogen Legacy Continues Today
5 years after the Mogen company was put out of business, and 15 years after the FDA issued their warning, other companies continue to manufacture and sell the Mogen clamp, doctors continue to use it, and the botches continue to happen. In addition, the devices are easily accessible. As of now, Mogen clamps can be purchased on eBay for under $15, and anyone with a credit card can buy them without license.

The FDA gave their warning in 2000, but the clamps were never recalled or modified, doctors kept using them, and the injuries kept on occurring. It wasn't until last year, in December of 2014, that the FDA recalled a number of Mogen clamps from a number of manufacturers, including Boss Instruments, Millennium Surgical, Symmetry Surgical, Medline Industries, CareFusion and others. The reason given in the text for the recall, however, was that “Instrumed did not market these devices prior to September 26, 1976, and therefore, does not meet all FDA requirements to market the devices as 'Pre-Amendment' devices." Certain companies, however, such as Misdom-Frank Corporation, Sklar Corporation, and Medco Inc., continue to sell and/or make the device.

Although the Mogen clamp itself was invented in 1954, it is actually one of many successors to a much older, traditional barzel device. Even so, a number of interested doctors who use the device, try to market the Mogen clamp as "a new and innovative approach."

The Mogen clamp's design is based on
a traditional tool used by Jewish mohels.
The word "mogen" is derived from the
Hebrew word for "shield," or "magain."

Neil Pollock, Murray Katz, Pierre Crouse and other doctors who specialize in male infant circumcision, boast their use of the Mogen clamp, and claim their "technique" to be "new and innovative," going as far as saying that the circumcisions they perform are "bloodless, painless and taking under 30 seconds."

Neil Pollock, flashing the tools of his trade

Neil Pollock in particular, has taken it upon himself to promote the use of the Mogen clamp as far away as Rwanda in Africa, and Haiti in the Carribean Rim. In fact, the WHO has approved the Mogen clamp for use in infant circumcision in Africa, under the pretext of HIV prevention. They're currently being used in Kenya, Rwanda and Botswana.

Even given the disreputable history of the Mogen clamp, somehow, "researchers" at TriHealth Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati thought it was necessary to conduct a comparative "study" to see what was the "better circumcision clamp." Given what is known about the Mogen clamp, the lawsuits, the FDA warning, the WHO etc., somehow the "researchers" have the audacity to begin with the hypothesis that the Mogen clamp is the superior circumcision device.

Conclusion
Even given the numerous reports of injury, even given the FDA warnings, even given the numerous lawsuits that put Mogen Circumcision Instruments out of business, even given the lawsuits against secondary manufacturers, even given the known design flaws of the clamp, even given the known risks for penile laceration and amputation even under the most ideal circumstances, the Mogen clamp continues to be made, sold, used and promoted as "medically acceptable."

It must be asked, why?
